If you have fasted in the past or fast annually for Ramadan, you already know about the changes that happen to your skin during the Holy Month. You’ve likely noted how the skin seems to dry out faster than usual and appears dull and depleted. When you abstain from food and drink between dawn and sunset, the lack of moisture dehydrates the skin. It’s important to stay hydrated outside of the fasting hours and adjust your usual beauty regime to account for these physical changes.
1. Replenish Water
Ensure that you drink generous quantities of water outside of the fasting hours and during iftar and suhoor. Initiate with several generous cups of pure H20 to replenish lost moisture. As part of rehydration, you can incorporate fibre-rich fruit and vegetable smoothies that replenish essential nutrients in your body. Avoid juices that are simply rich in fruit sugars or have added sugars. While it may be tempting to consume soda and caffeine-powered drinks for an energy spike, these drinks don’t provide the vital nourishment you need for passing the day during Ramadan or for healthy skin. Caffeine, being a mild diuretic, may increase your need to urinate, which can lead to a feeling of increased thirst throughout the day.
2. Simplify Your Facial Routine
When fasting, avoid thick foundations, concealers, eye shimmers and other makeup that coats the skin. Allow the skin to breathe. This is because the skin will be adjusting to the fast, and apart from becoming dry, can also start breaking out in response to the additional substances on the face. Acne breakouts are common during Ramadan, as the skin produces more oil in response to dehydration, leading to clogged pores. To continue to protect your skin against external damage, wear natural sunscreen.

3. Moisturise and Mist Multiple Times a Day
Moisturising your skin at least twice a day will go a long way in rescuing it from undesirable changes. Choose creams and lotions made from natural ingredients, that absorb deeply and seamlessly, and provide much-needed hydration in the form of water or botanical infusions. Choose non-comedogenic products that will not block the pores but can still lightly reinforce the natural skin barrier to allow it to lock in moisture.
